1949 Dodge Power Wagon - $35,900 - Atlanta, GA - When Dodge answered the call for post-war civilian version of military carryalls, they answered big with the Power Wagon. Featuring giant military tires, a two-speed four-wheel drive transfer case, front and rear power take offs and a 3,000-pound payload capacity, the Power Wagon introduced in 1946 was a true go-anywhere, haul-anything, heavy duty behemoth.

This 1949 Dodge Power Wagon has seen some nice, yet appropriate, power train upgrades to make it much more drivable by modern standards. Under the hood is a Mopar 318 cubic inch V8 with headers and a Holley four-barrel carburetor; it?s mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The original transfer case and power take-off were retained, so the four-wheel drive and front PTO winch both work as they should. The upgrade to power brakes and power steering is also a very welcome addition when trying to turn and stop a vehicle this large. The truck starts, runs and drives great (especially considering how large it is).

Paint quality is good, with a smooth, shiny finish on the cab and a textured finish on the fenders, running boards and bed. Panels are straight and the door alignment is good. The wood bed floor has been restored with new planks and is simply gorgeous; it's fitted with a clever wood bed cover finished in a darker color (the cover can easily be removed completely if you wish).

The interior shows well with paisley seat upholstery and door panels, newer industrial carpet and a quilted headliner. The door pulls and the transfer case levers are leather. A set of modern gauges adorn the transmission tunnel -- and lap belts have been added for safety. There's no radio and no heat

The overall result is a truck that maintains its post-war industrial bona fides and correct historic feel while incorporating more modern Chrysler drivetrain components. The owner of this truck, or a previous owner, used to live on Pirkle Road in Norcross. It's been painted since then, but one does not easily forget that interior. He drove the hell out of it, too. Nice guy.; I talked to him once. He had another one with a 354 Hemi in it at the time. No paisley on that one, it was much more military-looking. We were the two least-popular guys in the apartment complex. :D
