The paint fumes have cleared so I'm
Sitting here watching the Country Music Awards (I'm a closet George Strait fan :)) and thinking to myself "why do these "entertainers" sound so fricking bad?"
Then it hit me - they can't sing.

Some of them look pretty good - Kelly Pickler:giggedy: - but few of them could carry a tune in a dump truck.

What the fuck is Kid Rock doing on a country music show?
 
You're right!....and you win nothing....other than an acute awareness that most country musicians can't sing(which is why I choose not to listen if I don't have to). The days of pure singers like Marty Robbins are long gone. I still think Amarillo by Morning is quite possibly the best country song, ever. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to listening to Antrhax(that's not a joke).
 
Saw George Strait at a podunk Kansas county fair, just after he "made it" guess he still had contracts out. Hella nice guy stayed around and shook hands for nearly an hour.

Kid rock? sheet he just a Bocephus wanna-be. and I don't have to listen to him :banana:

Disco ruined country too :) what with all the cross-over artists who couldn't make it in the un-rock world.

Kid rock got in good with I think Hank Williams or some body don't ask me how. He has got to be the biggest ripoff artist I've ever heard. He came from a (c)rap background and can't write his own music. He's got a current ripoff of Warren Zevon and Lynyrd Skynyrd rolled into one :doh:and it sucks! But it still gets radio play go figure

Martina McBride can definately sing. Carrie Underwood, she's ok. I guess. She fits the "formula".

But how the Hell did Taylor Swift get a contract?

On a side note, my old Star Wars Galaxies character was named Javan Swift... I'd mount her.
 
I agree, some of the newest Artists are just pop stars. What the heck is Jessica Simpson doing singing country? Same deal with Swift, she's cute but doenst belong in country. Kenny Chesney turns me off with his new stuff, same deal with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (though she is smokin hot!). I like their older stuff but the new stuff has gone too much in the pop direction. This is the precise reason I discovered Classic Rock.

Now then my favorite artists of todays country are Montgomery Gentry and Trace Adkins. Those guys can really sing. I want to see both in concert one day.

Now then I'm back to listening to my Skynyrd mix, have Freebird just starting now. THATS music!
 
Well, I'll throw this thought in to the discussion:

There are singers and then there are recording artists.

They are two different things in my book.

Ever see the Simpson's episode where they recruit Bart and his buddies in to a boy band and subliminally send out armed forces recruitment messages?

The magic box that made them sound good is real and it gets used all the time in modern music. It's not so much one magic box, but the idea is the same.

You got me. I have to admit....the women have the voices today. Period. The women have gone from the corny, twangy Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette(though I do like them) sound to a much more sophisticated, finished sound. It's a good change. The male artists, on the other hand, are complete untalented asshats chosen only for their ability to get ticket sales from young girls.
 
Yep, very true. Not that I don't like a lot of the men, ie, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, et al, but, the girls are really great. I followed Carrie Underwood right from the start of American Idol, and knew she was special at the beginning. Taylor Swift........well, she's so-so, as far as a singer goes. I think she has gotten so popular because she was "discovered" so young........15 I believe when she got her first hit. She's good, but I don't think she warrants all the attention she seems to be getting. Because she's young, she has gathered a lot of affection from the "teeny-bopper" country kids. Just the same as Miley Cyrus has from the rest of the young kids. And who ever said she could sing either? Her dad is as dumb as a box o' rocks. :huh:
 
Vopcal ability - or any kind of ability - has become secondary in today's manufactured music market. It's all about the "look" and marketability.

If you're male, can wear a cowboy hat, tight jeans, and stand like you're trying to pee without anyone noticeing, you can be a country star. :)
Except for Keith Urban. I'm not sure where the Hell he fits in, if anywhere.

If you're female, good looks will take you far. Boobs, and/or that oh-so-pure-and-young look will take you farther.

Not that anybody would enjoy watching uggoes on stage, but can you imagine someone like Johnny Cash or Cass Elliot trying to make it today? Even Vince Gill, with his voice, being kind of chubby doesn't fit the "look".

I'll tell you why Kid Rock, Jessica Simpson and others have jumped to Country music. It's the royalties...if I remember correctly country music fans generally don't download as much from the internet and buy actual albums. Higher album sales equals higher royalties back to the artist so it is purely a money thing...wow big surprise....they'd whore themselves to death metal is it payed more.....:doubt:
