EEEEEEEKKKKK! it's a
I'm not a Chevy fan, but this is pretty interesting. Let it play thru then let it re-start. It will start a narrated version. You will have to watch a short commercial, but it's worth it.
CLICKY HERE!
This was put on by the "Insurance Institute for Highway Safety" for their 50th anniversary.

yah butt. 59 man doesn't have a cell phone, on star, gps gadgets and various sundry to play with. He's doing his job, watching the road and being aware of his surroundings. He'll steer clear of the idiot in the new car :)

BTW I wasn't aware chevy made anything in 1959 :D

Well, I didn't see a narrated version, but, having lived through a horrendous accident in a 40 yr. old car, I did find it interesting. This "set-up" was actually very similar to what happened with our accident, except that ours involved a Harley. However, the hit was in pretty much exactly the same place, and now I know what would have happened had it been a car that hit us. Not pretty. Luckily, the Harley hit the left frame rail, which took much of the impact, but in one view near the end of that video, it shows the impact from the right side of the '59, and the right fender bends completely around the front of the car............EXACTLY like ours did! [smilie=f:

Old cars fold up like a house of cards in the wind, and body-on-frame vehicles are the worst of the bunch.
Crumple zones and unitized construction - two of the most signifigant safety advancements in the last fifty years. :)
Don't pay much mind to the folding sheetmetal, look instead to the integrity if the passenger compartment. That '09 Chevy took the hit remarkabley well. If they had run that '59 into something like a BMW or Mercedes, the occupants probably wouldn't even have those minor injuries.

Mid 60s GMs always had horrible front and side impact ratings.. Lets see that same test head on with a 64 Imperial an see what happens..lol
